GN82 Ballasted Roofs-Fire Performance and Wind Stability
Ballasted roof systems are widely used within UK construction as a means of providing radiant solar heat protection of the waterproofing and resistance to wind uplift. In addition, ballast is recognised within fire guidance as a protective layer that can contribute to achieving deemed-to-satisfy external fire performance classifications for roof coverings.
The purpose of this guidance note is to clarify that the aggregate size ranges referenced in fire performance provisions are primarily concerned with achieving adequate coverage and mass to protect the waterproofing layer from external fire exposure.
