Exeter College Opens Brand New Construction Innovation Centre–Providing Boost of Talent for the Industry

Developed to help meet industry demands for new talent, the facility includes resources to train next generation of roofers.

On 17 June 2025, the official opening of the Construction Innovation Centre at Exeter College was celebrated by hosting the CITB SkillBuild regional heats in roof slating and tiling.

As proud sponsors of SkillBuild, NFRC was delighted to be in attendance, with NFRC President, Colin McCorquodale, delivering a speech to commemorate the occasion.

Six competitors went head to head in the new state of the art centre, with materials supplied by NFRC Members SIG Roofing, Glidevale Protect, and SR Timber Ltd. An impressive demonstration of skills was displayed as the young roofers took to the challenge enthusiastically.

The Construction Innovation Centre, developed with industry leaders and driven by Steve Dowell, a current Roofing Tutor at the college, is a response to the increasing demand for new talent in the roofing sector. Cutting edge resources and tutoring will provide students with the experience to learn the trade to industry standards and develop themselves professionally.

Commenting on the impressive range of resources available to provide quality training, Colin said,

“This is a significant opportunity for the college and wider region to develop new talent that is in high demand.

“Everyone involved has done a remarkable job and I’m certain those who study here will go on to fulfil very successful careers in roofing and construction”.

Speaking after the event, Steve said,

“It was an outstanding event to show the skillset of the young learners at Exeter College and each of the competitors delivered an impressive display.

“We've been very lucky to have been supported by Exeter College to open the facility and be able to invest in producing the next generation of roofing talent.

“All of us were absolutely delighted that NFRC President Colin McCorquodale was able to travel down from Scotland and deliver his speech for the opening, and we’re grateful for the continued support of NFRC.

“The energy in the room was electric and even today, the day after the event, everybody at the college is still raving about it.

“Roofing became a winner yesterday.”
