Key Principles for a Roofer’s CV

Writing a CV can seem challenging if you've not tried it before, but following this template will build you a comprehensive, detailed, and effective CV to demonstrate your skills and experience to recruiters and employers.

There are four key recommendations to include:

  1. Keep it clear and structured – max 2 pages, easy to scan.
  2. Tailor it to progression opportunities – highlight leadership, training, and transferable skills, not just hands-on work.
  3. Show achievements, not just duties – quantify where possible (e.g. size of projects, team leadership, safety record).
  4. Include certifications and training – CSCS card, NVQs, RoofCERT, health & safety, or manufacturer training.

Suggested CV Structure

This is a simple but professional and effective structure with examples. Make sure to include each of the headings and all details of your past and present employment and experience.

1. Personal Statement (Profile)

3–4 sentences summarising who you are, your roofing expertise, and ambition.

Example:

“Experienced roofing operative with 8+ years across slating, tiling, and flat roofing systems. Skilled at managing small teams on site and ensuring projects are delivered safely and to high standards. Now seeking opportunities to progress into site supervision and expand leadership responsibilities.”

2. Key Skills

Tailor to both technical and transferable skills.

* Roofing disciplines: Slating & Tiling, Single Ply, Liquid, Sheeting & Cladding

* Site supervision & mentoring apprentices

* Reading technical drawings / interpreting specifications

* Health & safety compliance (RAMS, working at height)

* Problem solving & snag resolution

* Time management & organisation

3. Employment

List roles most recent first. For each: Job title | Employer | Dates | Location

Use bullet points to show impact and progression.

Tips for Career Progression

  • If aiming for Team Leader/Supervisor roles, emphasise mentoring, supervising, health & safety, and communication.
  • If aiming for Site Manager roles, highlight planning, liaising with multiple trades, and leadership training (e.g. SSSTS/SMSTS).
