Maintaining the Common Assessment Standard
Following the publication of the latest version of the Common Assessment Standard on 1 July, the Building Safety section is now mandatory for all companies carrying out design or building work covered by the Building Safety Act. The Act applies broadly to work on all buildings, including construction, extensions, renovation and refurbishment, structural alterations, maintenance activities, installation of Safety Critical features, and the provision of controlled services or fittings.
Build UK has reported a growing number of members now requiring companies in their supply chains to have successfully completed the Building Safety section in order to work on projects within the scope of the Act. However, it has become clear that some Specialist Contractors are choosing not to complete this section because they believe it only applies to Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs). This is not the case.
Any company undertaking work regulated by the Act should complete the Building Safety section and may find themselves unable to access work until they do so.
Companies that have already achieved the Common Assessment Standard through any of the Recognised Assessment Bodies do not need to repeat the process with others. Instead, they can simply give permission for their data to be shared at no additional cost, ensuring visibility to a wider group of Contractors and Clients. Avoid duplication—sharing your data is quick, reduces unnecessary costs and effort, and helps position your business to secure more opportunities.
