Remediation Programme Progress

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) has introduced a new Remediation Improvement Plan aimed at accelerating the assessment of Gateway Two applications for remediation schemes.

As part of this initiative, the regulator has committed to clearing the majority of outstanding remediation applications submitted in 2024 by 30 April 2026.

The plan sets out a series of measures to improve efficiency and reduce delays. These include the creation of a dedicated Remediation Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), mirroring the approach taken by the Innovation Unit for new-build applications. This team will include named account managers to improve coordination and communication with applicants. In addition, the BSR is expanding its workforce to increase Regulatory Lead capacity and ease existing caseload pressures.

To help move applications forward more quickly, the regulator will also make greater use of a process known as “Approval with Requirements”. This allows applications that broadly meet Building Regulations to proceed, with any outstanding details to be submitted at a later stage. Alongside this, new, targeted guidance for remediation projects will be published. Build UK’s Gateway Two guidance already outlines the key information required for applications relating to existing Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs).

Separately, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has released updated figures covering remediation progress across residential buildings in England that are 11 metres and above. As of the end of January 2026, work has been completed on 36% of the 4,191 identified buildings, with a further 16% currently undergoing remediation. Among taller buildings of 18 metres and above, 46% of the 2,355 identified have now been fully remediated.
