Remembering Jack Camp

Jack was a loyal supporter of NFRC and proudly served as NFRC President from 2010 to 2012. It was a role he took seriously, but also one that he clearly enjoyed. He was particularly passionate about his duties on the London and Southern Counties Regional Committee, where his enthusiasm, knowledge, and commitment to the industry were greatly valued. 
 
Jack was a welcoming man, known for his warmth, good humour, and genuine interest in people. He was also deeply committed to improving standards within roofing, and that dedication was recognised with the NFRC Pin of Honour, which was awarded after his time as President. 

Jack’s term as President coincided with a period when NFRC continued to champion professionalism, technical standards, and quality across the roofing industry, something he was hugely committed to achieving.

Tributes to Jack have been made across social media, with current NFRC President, Colin McCorquodale, saying “Jack is remembered not only for his contribution to the Federation, but for the person he was”. 

Colin recalls Jack sharing his knowledge during a television watchdog segment, as well as the many occasions when Jack was great company at NFRC events.  

And, of course, there was the chain.

Jack took particular pride in wearing the NFRC President’s chain of office. It was a symbol of the position he had been entrusted with, and one that he wore with unmistakable pride. That pride, and Jack’s passion for NFRC, is echoed in the memories being shared by those who knew him. 

Richard Soan, fellow member of the London & Southern Committee, remembers Jack as “a great character” whose commitment to NFRC and its members was unbelievable. He recalls how proud Jack was to become President, and how much inspiration Jack provided when Richard went on to become Chairman of the London and Southern Counties Region and later joined the Board of Directors. 

Richard shares fond memories of the drinks they shared after meetings in London, where conversations ranged from all things roofing to Jack’s other great passions, cricket and football. 

“He will be sadly missed by all of us who knew him,” Richard said. 

Steve Revell, who served on the NFRC Board alongside Jack, also remembers Jack with great affection. He recalls attending NFRC events with his wife Denise, Jack, and Jack’s wife Carol, and credits Jack with encouraging him to become NFRC President when Jack himself was in the Chair. 

Steve also remembers Jack’s legendary enthusiasm for the hospitality following London and Southern Counties Committee meetings, joking that Jack would be the first to complain if there was no wine at lunchtime. 

Steve, too, recalls great memories of Jack‘s love for the NFRC President’s chain, and 
recalls an occasion when it was nearly lost on the London Underground following a Board meeting, a story that perhaps perfectly captures the character of a man who took his responsibilities seriously, but never took himself too seriously. 

Behind the humour was a deep commitment to the Federation and the people it represented. Steve remembers Jack as someone who worked tirelessly to improve conditions within the roofing industry for NFRC members. 

NFRC shares these memories of Jack paint a picture that goes beyond his formal roles and achievements. He was a colleague, a mentor, a friend, and someone who genuinely cared about the roofing industry and the people within it. 

Jack’s contribution to NFRC will remain part of the Federation’s history, but it is the personal memories, the conversations after meetings, the friendships made, and the laughter shared at NFRC events that will perhaps be remembered most fondly. 

The messages being shared by members of the NFRC community are a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much of his time and energy to the industry. 

NFRC extends its deepest sympathies to Jack’s family, particularly his wife Carol, and to all those who knew and loved him. 

Jack will be greatly missed, but he will be remembered with enormous affection and gratitude by the many people whose lives he touched through NFRC and the wider roofing industry.
