S&P Global / CIPS UK Construction PMI®—December 2022

New orders were in decline in December and business confidence was falling, according to the latest PMI data.

The index posted an overall fall in construction activity in December 2022, in addition to a fall in new orders. At 48.8 in December, down from 50.4 in November, the headline seasonally adjusted S&P Global / CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers' Index® (PMI®), reflecting month-on-month changes in total industry activity, registered below the neutral 50.0 mark. Commercial construction activity continued to increase, but overall activity was held back by residential and civil engineering work. Poor confidence, and weak client demand, were reflected by respondents. December data indicated the first fall in employment for almost two years. Respondents suggested that vacancies weren't being filled, after disappointing sales.
