S&P Global / CIPS UK Construction PMI®, January 2023

UK construction companies reported another downturn in business activity during January, but business expectations for the year ahead were improved.

Firms reported downturned business activity once again in January. Business expectations for the year ahead remain positive, with confidence in January rebounding significantly from December, at its highest level for six months. Survey respondents noted that the general economic outlook appeared to have improved. At 48.4 in January (falling from 48.8 in December), the headline S&P Global / CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers' Index® (PMI®), which measures month-on-month changes in industry activity, posted below the neutral 50.0 threshold for the second consecutive month.
