SkillBuild Regional Qualifiers makes BBC Local News Broadcast

On Wednesday 6 May, competitors hoping for a place at the SkillBuild final went head-to-head at Exeter College, demonstrating the best of their talent under the watchful eye of expert judges.

NFRC was in attendance, alongside sponsors SIG Roofing, S R Timber, wienerberger, and Hambleside Danelaw, but we weren’t the only ones cheering on the young roofers throughout the day.

BBC reporter John Danks and team were on hand to capture footage and speak with competitors, which was aired that evening live on BBC Spotlight Exeter.

Those who took the opportunity to speak on camera included Head Judge and Future President of NFRC, Andy Rowlands, and SkillBuild Event Co-ordinator, Chirs Slack. The segment also featured a spotlight on Jacob Blight, who previously won the SkillBuild National Final. Today, Jacob runs his own roofing business.

Both Jacob and first year apprentice Oliver Carrol, who was taking part in the regional heat, spoke about the intensity of being against the clock for the competition.

The recognition from BBC is a significant testament to the efforts of Exeter College’s commitment to training new roofing talent and marks the one-year anniversary since the college officially opened its Construction Innovation Centre and Roofing Centre of Excellence.

Speaking of the occasion, NFRC South West Regional Manager, Stuart Black, said “It’s absolutely brilliant. Anyone in the construction industry knows we’re up against challenges to bring new talent into trades, so to give SkillBuild and these young roofers a moment to shine on a major TV network is invaluable."

The SkillBuild national finals take place on 17-19 November at Arena MK. The competition is open to the public on 18-19 November and tickets are free. NFRC will be in attendance alongside our sponsors and supporters and wish all competitors the very best of luck.
