Updated Common Assessment Standard: Building Safety Section Now Mandatory – Act by 1 October 2025

Build UK has released Version 5 of the Common Assessment Standard (CAS), introducing an important change: the Building Safety section is now mandatory for all companies working under the Building Safety Act. This applies to all NFRC Member companies requiring the CAS.

What This Means for NFRC Members

If your company is already CAS certified, you will need to complete the new mandatory Building Safety question set as part of the updated overall question set the next time you renew or go through the certification process with a Recognised Assessment Body

Some major Build UK Contractor Members have confirmed they will require their supply chain to have completed the Building Safety section by 1 October 2025. That means now is the time to act.

Why It Matters

Under the Building Safety Act, any organisation appointing individuals or businesses to carry out work must ensure they are competent. This includes demonstrating ‘organisational capability’, a legal requirement that applies to all roofing contractors.

The CAS is increasingly being used by both public and private sector clients to assess this capability. For NFRC Members, gaining or maintaining CAS certification is not only about compliance—it can help you win work with larger contractors and stand out in the marketplace.

Recognised Assessment Bodies

You can obtain CAS certification through any of the following recognised assessment bodies:

If you are working with clients or contractors who require CAS, certification is required only once through any of these bodies, with subsequent annual renewals. If your company holds more than one CAS-related certification, you may wish to review and streamline to reduce duplication and unnecessary pre-qualification paperwork. If you are working on projects that do not require CAS, this does not apply. If you are working with clients who specifically require certain recognised assessment body certificates and do not wish to upgrade to the CAS, proceed as usual.
