Mental health and wellbeing affect everyone differently, but they cannot be ignored, particularly in a demanding and physical trade like roofing.
When working at height, tiredness, distraction, stress or feeling overwhelmed can affect judgement, communication, concentration and decision-making. This can increase the likelihood of mistakes, unsafe choices or important warning signs being missed. In a high-risk environment, even a momentary lapse can have serious, and sometimes fatal, consequences.
Weather the Storm is a practical way to check in with ourselves and the people around us.
Just like the weather, our mental wellbeing can change quickly. We may feel sunny and able to cope one day, but under pressure, unsettled or stormy the next.
The campaign encourages everyone to pause, recognise how they are feeling and start a conversation when something does not seem right.
Weather the Storm is not about diagnosing mental ill health or expecting workers to deal with problems alone. It is about:
Everyone has a role to play in creating a working environment where people feel able to speak honestly about their wellbeing, whether you employ others, work as part of a team or work for yourself.
This means:
A simple check-in can make a real difference. By making wellbeing part of everyday conversations, we can look after ourselves and each other, strengthen our teams and help everyone return home safely.
Any organisation or individual can pledge their support for the Weather the Storm campaign.
By pledging your support, you confirm that you have read and understood the guidance and are committed to putting its principles into practice, helping to make wellbeing part and parcel of health and safety in roofing – whether you work for yourself, work with others or employ a team.
NFRC has proudly supported each of these charities through fundraising at our events over the years.
