Community Roofing Project for Aspiring Roofers

Scotland’s Nat 5 students were invited to put their skills to the test recently, working on two local community projects.

Following the official launch of the Future Roofing Project last month, students were presented with a special opportunity to complete a project for a local charity based in Hansel Village, as chosen by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Ayrshire, who announced the launch at Prestwick Academy.

The project, a collaboration between the youngsters and locals from across Ayr and Prestwick, was overseen by Andy Kerr, Operations Director at KRB Group (Ayr) Ltd, and involved re-roofing a wishing well that had been gifted to the village.

“It has been great to see that the students involved in the project have grown in confidence and are continuously improving their slating skill set with each lesson. Their ability to work as part of a team and individually throughout lessons has been impressive,” said Andy.

Having shown promise and skill, Andy offered the chance to work on a larger project, which the students obliged to with enthusiasm.

Taking the challenge in their stride, the aspiring young roofers began work on River Gardens, Auchencruive, which required rebuilding a dilapidated roof. The re-roofing project was carried out on a building for a local Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation facility where residents are given support to make positive and meaningful changes in their lives.

The project was not only another valuable opportunity for the students to practice their skills under Andy’s mentorship and guidance, but it offered residents the chance to learn more about the trade.

“The students have truly been a pleasure to work with, they continuously show a willingness to listen and learn, and each week you can see them growing in confidence.

“They can work on mathematical tasks to measure roofs and materials while carrying out the practical elements of slating the rigs, etc.”

All the participants gained first-hand experience of working as a professional roofer, whilst learning about traditional roofing techniques and materials, and applying the knowledge gained through the Nat 5.

This follows promising communications between the NFRC Scotland team, DYW Ayrshire, Greenwood Academy, and Auchenharvie Academy, with the potential of the Nat 5 course being launched on their campus next year.

“The course has helped the students to see a more detailed pathway and future when they finish school.

“I hope they pursue a career in the roofing industry, because with the right education and direction they should have very successful careers,” Andy continued.

NFRC commends the work of our members across the region for their dedication to raising the profile of careers in roofing and proudly support any efforts to showcase the trade.
