NFRC Members Deliver First-of-its-kind Skills Demonstration in England
On 26 June, Year 9 and 10 Design and Technology students at Outwood Academy, Normanby, were invited to try single ply, slating and slate cutting, sheeting and cladding, and tiling across three stations with tools, materials, and the expert guidance of NFRC Members.
Leading the single ply station were Templar Roofing, with Blade Roofing delivering sheeting and cladding, and roof tiling. Samuel Moore Roofing offered a taster session in traditional slate roofing and slate cutting.
Each station included the types of materials used on-site, and students were talked through processes and procedures whilst engaging in the task and asking questions.
The session was the first of its kind in an English school and was a valuable opportunity for students to learn from industry experts and experience the type of work carried out across the roofing sector.
Students also learned about the type of projects undertaken by each discipline, where materials are sourced, and how they are created, such as the clay tiles kindly provided by William Blyth.
Feedback from the day indicated that the event was well received and a huge success amongst the students, with one parent emailing to say their son ‘hasn’t stopped talking about it’ and found it ‘very informative’.
Regional Manager, Martin Adwick said, “The demonstration day was amazing, to see the students engaged in the roofing activities and asking the trade members questions, was very encouraging.
“I spoke to the Head of Year 9 and he told me he couldn’t believe how they struggle to get certain students engaged in activities, but here, they were so engrossed in the roofing rigs it was a pleasure to behold.
“I couldn’t have put this event together without the members who gave up their time and the suppliers who donated materials.”
Jacqui Hutchinson, Primary Careers Co-ordinator, helped coordinate the event with Outwood Academy. Speaking of the event she said, “Wow! Just Wow! It was an absolute privilege to bring this to Outwood Normanby, and I can't wait for our next steps.”
NFRC continues to advocate for opportunities for younger generations to explore roofing careers. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch.
