Northern Ireland: Addressing Labour Shortages, Training Provision, and the Future Skills Pipeline

Alongside labour shortages, many members have raised concerns about the lack of accessible, high‑quality roofing training in the Northern Ireland region.

Addressing Labour Shortages & Training Needs Members continue to highlight labour shortages and the lack of accessible roofing training across all disciplines  in the region. To secure a future skills pipeline, we must evidence demand for new local provision. I am engaging with training providers, but progress depends on clear employer support, cohort numbers and access to qualified trainers.

There is a strong opportunity for experienced roofers to step into trainer and assessor roles, helping shape the next generation while progressing their own careers.

How Members can help to build a viable case for new roofing courses, please indicate if you can support:

  • Apprenticeships – What disciplines / How many places?
  • Work experience placements – Can you provide this?
  • School and college engagement – Would you be willing to support such events?

Your input is essential to demonstrate demand and secure investment in regional training.

I am currently working with the Northern Regional College to facilitate roofing training with them. Member involvement helps promote roofing careers, engage future apprentices and strengthen the industry’s long term workforce.
