Office of National Statistics (ONS): Construction output in Great Britain, January 2023
Delays and cancellations contributed to an overall fall in output in January.
Read the full ONS report. January data indicated an estimated 1.7 per cent fall in monthly construction output is—the weakest monthly growth since June 2022. Anecdotal evidence supported the ongoing narrative surrounding economic uncertainty leading to delays, cancellations, and weakened demand. This has particularly contributed to an ongoing slowdown in the housing sector. It also highlighted the impact of heavy rainfall in early January (meaning that outdoor work was negatively affected but demand for repair and maintenance work was raised). Overall, output of new work fell four per cent, with repair and maintenance work up two per cent.
