Edinburgh College

Key information

For young people:

Edinburgh College offers a wide range of construction courses including entry to construction and pre-apprenticeship courses. This allows for you to train in the different trade areas and find the one that best suits you.

The roofing department delivers robust and in-depth training to roofing apprentices, including roof slating, tiling and render work. You will learn how to correctly utilise these different materials and by the end of your time at Edinburgh College, you will have the skills and knowledge to confidently tackle any work in your craft area.

For employers:

We deliver PDA Roofing SCQF Level 6 within Edinburgh College’s Granton and Forthside Campuses. This consists of 21 practical units covering tiling, slating, render and health & safety. We currently run this award over a two-year period with students attending college on block release.

We also deliver SVQ Roofing Occupations SCQF Level 6 which is the work-based element of the roofing apprenticeship. One of our work-based assessors will observe your candidate carrying out the different aspects of roof work on site and once the candidate is deemed as competent, they will carry out their skills test within our Forthside Campus.

Provision: What and where?

We currently offer two, three and four year routes for apprentices. The candidate will attend college for the first two years of their apprenticeship in a block release fashion. During this time, they will complete their roofing PDA.

In the final two years of their apprenticeship they will continue to work towards the completion of their SVQ portfolio. Within the final six months of their apprenticeship they will carry out their skills test.

The majority of students within our course are from the Edinburgh and Lothians areas. But many of our students utilise accommodation provided by the managing agents we deal with.
