Optimum Skills

Key information

For young people:

Optimum Skills recognise that young people are the future of the construction industry and require the basic skills and confidence to enter the sector—more so when wanting to become a roofer. Here at Optimum Skills we offer pre-apprenticeship programmes which allow you to sample the industry prior to committing to an apprenticeship, as the ideology of the industry often differs to the reality. Our programmes are designed to suit new entrants whatever the skillset. These programmes vary in length depending on the individual and they build the perfect foundation for progression onto an apprenticeship leading to a sustainable career in Roof Slating and Tiling or Built Up Flat Roofing.

As part of the programme four weeks work experience is required, however prior to this, Health and Safety and Working at Height training is completed along with basic roofing skills.

Once site-ready, you will be matched with an employer where you will spend four weeks on-site learning what the trade entails. If this placement does not work out, we offer further training or match you with another employer. This work experience is vital as it gives you a real insight into the industry. You will be supported every step of the way by our tutor who is an industry expert with over 34 years’ experience.

Optimum Skills are invested in each and every learner that comes through our door, our staff are here to support and offer information, advice and guidance while you are with us and beyond.

For employers:

Our intent is to train the next generation of roofers and help fill the ever-increasing skills gap and labour shortage being felt amongst the industry.

Working in partnership with roofing employers who are as passionate as we are, we can offer totally bespoke programmes to suit your business needs as we recognise that one size does not fit all. Optimum Skills are responsive to employer needs: we will support and work alongside you to ensure that new entrants have the desired soft skills that are needed and valued by today’s employers. We will guide you through the Apprenticeship Standards, supporting and working with you to ensure the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours required are being met.

We are able to tailor our programmes to suit your needs offering a seamless learning journey for both apprentices and employers. Our staff will also support with any grant initiatives that are available so there is no need to pay extra for this this support from a third party.

We are also a CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO) and will be happy to discuss any commercial training needs that you might have.

Provision: What and where?

We typically operate via day release in our Construction Academy based in Gateshead. This allows us to work in tandem ensuring that milestones are being met and progression against the Apprenticeship Standards is on track. As mentioned, we recognise that one size does not fit all so we can deliver on-site and online for employers providing the correct support mechanism is in place.

Other delivery methods such as block release and geographical areas can be discussed with our staff and we always strive to offer the best service possible.

We cover all areas of the North East of England.

Courses included Roof Slater and Tiler (18 months to two years) and Waterproof Membranes Installer (18 months to two years).
