NFRC UK Roofing Awards 2017—Finalists

We are delighted to announce the finalists for this year's entries into The UK Roofing Awards 2017.

Considerations that were taken into account in the selection process include the degree of difficulty, workmanship, problem solving, contribution to the built environment, environmental qualities and the aesthetics of the build. After much deliberation, the Judging Panel has selected the following entries in their respective categories:

Green Roofing

  • Bridgman & Bridgman Llp Bransholme Pumping Station
    • Installation of the first fully removable green roof in the UK on a flood water pumping station in Hull, preventing the City and 17,000 homes from flooding. The 30-degree pitched wildflower roof has 42 crane-lifted sections which enable access to the storm water pumps within the building.
  • Axter Ltd Centenary Quay
    • New homes development within Southampton riverside rejuvenation, incorporating robust waterproofing and bespoke living roof designed to enhance flora and fauna diversity in this harsh environment. Comprising coastal grassland growing medium and seed mix capable of thriving in this exposed site and salt-laden winds.
  • Sky Garden Ltd Macallan Distillery
    • The Macallan stands for quality, craftsmanship and luxury. The eye-catching roof for their distillery certainly instils these brand qualities. The contractor was selected by landscape architects to assist with the design in 2014 and were delighted to see this prestigious project all the way through to its impressive fulfilment.
  • ICB (Waterproofing) Ltd Nottingham University
    • The CSC building incorporates the latest technologies allowing for it to become carbon-neutral over its lifetime. The curved sloped roof was waterproofed with a single-ply membrane, covered with ICB green roofing system and topped with a wildflower blanket, to give an aesthetically pleasing finish which also adds to the sustainability of the building.

Liquid Applied Roofing and Waterproofing

  • Mitie Tilley Roofing Gatwick Airport
    • The existing flat roof above the North Terminal was failing and experiencing internal water leaks. This project demonstrated first-class delivery whilst the airport was in full operation. The client demanded the highest of standards of QHSE, security, zero defects and delivered on a strict timescale.
  • Skyform (Scotland) Ltd New Build, Forbes Place, Aberdeen
    • The project involved insulating and waterproofing a series of large flat roofs, terraces and podium terraces and desks. All areas forming part of a prestigious group of newbuild apartments in Dyce. A complex task completed within 12 months.
  • Volkerlaser Priority Schools
    • Using expert and innovative techniques to save time, the contractor managed to save three weeks off the programme time each of the twelve sites which equated to 36 weeks in total, unquestionably a significant programme saving. 
  • Makers Construction Ltd with Triflex (UK) Ltd Royal Arch Apartments
    • The Mailbox is an iconic building in the heart of Birmingham. In 2013, a major renovation project began which culminated in the installation or a roof with a large skylight over the shopping centre, creating an atrium for the private apartments above. The contractor was called on to complete the roofing works following a dispute between the client and the original contractor.

  • B & D Roofing and Building Ltd AMA Cramond
    • High quality, new build, residential development in an exclusive suburb of Edinburgh, not a typical single-ply roofing project.
  • Contour Roofing (Essex) Limited Cheltenham House
    • Following the completion of another award wining roof, the contractor was called upon to provide a premium waterproofing solution to a new build in London N17.
  • Flat Roofing Membranes Ltd Lymington Shores
    • High-end residential development requiring multiple single-ply roof specifications to 12 villas and three apartment blocks. Key performance indicators include complex roof designs, high-impact aesthetics, sustainable membranes, high-quality workmanship, meeting programme timescales for following trades and sheer scale of project (11,931 sq.m). 
  • Carlisle Construction Materials Ltd / Topek Ltd Macallan Distillery
    • Innovative ​and Modular building design. Product specification and precision manufacturing, all the roofing panels sit perfectly together to find a sustainable solution to a very challenging brief.

Reinforced Bitumen Membranes

  • Weatherproofing Advisors Airbus
    • Spanning over 26 roofs and approx. 23,000sq.m, the contractor stripped the existing roof that had handrail in situ whilst the business maintained full operations testing satellites. The original construction meant the 120lm gutters with no outlets, were overflowing into the building.
  • M&J Group ​Packaging Manufacturer, Wiltshire
    • 12,000m2 re-roofing carried out over a fully operational factory, including stripping off the existing decking and installing new profiled metal decking and reinforcing the existing structure.
  • M&J Group Fleet Bank House
    • Incredibly complex project, over highly sensitive government offices where roof mounted plant could not be moved or altered. The contractor worked tirelessly in assisting with the specification and design, ensuring that the building was fully watertight, with zero disruption.
  • SPV Group Four Seasons
    • This project demonstrated the contractors ability to undertake a detailed, meticulous and intricate large, built-up RBM roofing project, on a busy shopping centre, which remained operational throughout.

  • Bauder Ltd / Accurate Roofing Ltd British Airways i360
    • The world's tallest moving observation tower, with an accessible roof terrace area, featuring 1,500m2 of reinforced, inverted hot melt waterproofing system with hard landscaping that is designed to the life of the building.
  • Prater / Radmat Fitzroy Place
    • Fitzroy Place is a unique collection of prestigious new homes, enticing stores, a restaurant and high quality office space, all gathered around a stunning landscaped square. Logistically the project was especially challenging with the commercial and residential elements being built concurrently - limiting the distribution of materials on site severely.​
  • Prater / Radmat One Angel Court
    • Primarily Prater and Radmat delivered a hot melt package for this prestigious, 25-storey office in central London, featuring five roof gardens and terraces - a worthy addition to Bank Conservation Area. Working in this logistically challenging location, project planning and execution were imperative throughout to accommodate multiple non-standard details.

  • IKO Plc / Infallible Systems Tower Bridge
    • Tower Bridge Iconic grade 1 Listed building, river gateway to London, Tight programme with deadline that couldn't be changed Renew all waterproofing and mastic paving 4500m2 Bridge still working to river traffic and pedestrians.​

Sheeting and Cladding

  • M&J Group Packaging Manufacturer, Yorkshire
    • A project value of £390k and total size 1350m2, this unique project involved cutting out a section of the previously waterproofed flat roof, raising the roof level 3.5m and installing sheeting and cladding to new elevation, including new roof lights, to accommodate new machinery. ​
  • Lakesmere Leeds Station
    • Delivery of a complex cladding and glazing package to the new southern entrance at Leeds Station in West Yorkshire. This opulent landmark scheme plays and important role in the wider regeneration of the area and has created an iconic feature at the UK's second busiest rail station.​
  • Lakesmere Greenwich Energy
    • This new low carbon energy centre in London's Greenwich Peninsula development represents all that is great in modern construction. The flue tower element, known as The Optic Cloak, stepped outside the boundaries of usual architectural design to that of an art installation, designed by renowned British artist, Conrad Shawcross.
  • Structura UK Ltd West Croydon Bus Station
    • This is an outstanding project with notable significance in the regeneration of a maligned inner-city suburb. The design intention for the use of Kalwall to maximise natural daylight beneath the canopy whilst minimising harsh light pollution of an evening, has created a safe and accessible environment for all.​

  • Richardson Roofing Command of the Oceans
    • Historic building that underwent transformation to provide 21st century visitor facilities and gallery space.
  • Roles Broderick Roofing Limited Exeter College
    • The construction of a prestigious new college block with teaching and student accommodation. Maintaining the original listed Victorian façade all within Oxford city centre. The building was designed to have a stark contrast between the old and very contemporary new curved stainless steel building.
  • Roles Broderick Roofing Limited Hastings Pier
    • The regeneration of the historic Victorian Pier that was destroyed by fire in 2010. The installation of VM Natural Zinc to the two domed roofs and link roof. The entire pier was rebuilt to the original Eugenius Birch design of 1869 with the addition of a modern visitor’s centre.​
  • Richardson Roofing ​Royal Mint
    • The boldness of the design and uniqueness of use of the materials, both of which capture the essence of the brand new Royal Mint within.​

Lead Roofing

  • Lead-Tech Roofing Ltd Cramond House
    • Replacement of the existing lead roofing on a triple-aspect garage, which has been incorrectly installed and designed.
  • K&M Leadwork Ltd Goring Clock Tower
    • Replacement of the existing 90-year old clock tower roof. The contractor was appointed to strip the lead and replace, altering the design to prevent the previous failure reoccurring where the water had penetrated behind the posts, leading to water ingress and the failure of the existing roof.
  • Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd South Cliff
    • Lead detailing on the building formed a significant enhancement to the visual appearance of the new property. 
  • The Roof Group t/a Greenstone Roofing ​Stargroves
    • Swimming pool roof covered with Welsh slate to the pitches and lead to the flat roof areas. The design required a warm roof so the ventilation was crucial.

  • Mac Roofing & Contracting Ltd Bolton Albert Halls
    • This project is an excellent example of how careful planning and good communication between the Specialist Roofing Contractor and the Principal Contractor can produce an outstanding final result. Regular progress meetings, outstanding project management and first class workmanship all helped to overcome a number of logistical and technical challenges.
  • Redwing Roofing Ltd Chandlers Wharf
    • This was a highly complex build of twelve bespoke units on a logistically demanding site, requiring interfacing of numerous roofing disciplines, resulting in an exceptionally high quality finish. The natural slate cladding and complementing zinc flashings gave a crisp look to these buildings which fitted in perfectly with the surrounding town.​
  • Contour Roofing (Essex) Limited St Joseph's College
    • Re-roof of a complex Grade II (1866) listed building that needed to blend in with the scenic surroundings. The roof featured both refurbishment and new build work.
  • Apex Limited T/A Apex Roofing & Maintenance ​Tourist Information Centre, ​Guernsey
    • Built in 1911 it's the only reinforced concrete building in Guernsey and comprises of a reinforced concrete frame that was clad in faced blue granite. The roof structure's reinforced concrete, including dormer structures clad with slate. The dormer fronts have rendered finish, the eaves soffit panels and corbels are concrete.​

  • Fildes Roofing Ltd Aldwick Hundred
    • Re-roofing of a Grade II listed house with an extremely complex roof shape.
  • Complete Roofing Contractors Ltd Caring Wood
    • Unique project where the architects wanted a traditional Kent Oast look with a modern twist, which required all tiles and angles to be individually cut.
  • Rowlands Roofing / Marley Eternit Quintain House
    • Demonstrates the highest standards of roofing expertise, craftsmanship and delivery to turn and ambitious architectural vision into striking reality. The stunning curves articulated by the beauty of clay tiles are the crowning glory of a roofing masterpiece. It was created with passion, attention to detail and unrivalled skill.​
  • Monier Redland Ltd / Avonside Southampton Residential Roofing St Ives House
    • A noticeably large roof, which includes turrets, dormers, chimneys, areas of flat roofing, and monoridges, as well as vertical tiling. All details were finished to an exceptionally high standard, which included hand finishing using traditional tools. In addition, the logistics, weather, and complexity of this project added significant challenges.​

  • Fildes Roofing Ltd Sole Street Building
    • Historical property that required sympatric replacement of the roof covering.
  • Martin-Brooks (Roofing Specialists) Ltd. The Old Poultry Building
    • The client wanted the building recreating exactly which meant carefully salvaging virtually all of the tiles and special copper ridge pieces. Likewise, each piece of the rainwater goods had to be recreated exactly to match.​
  • Emerton Roofing (Western) Limited The Boat House
    • Stunning example of architecture ahead of its time in days gone by. The iconic building features a collection of highly decorated roof slopes, through the use of pattern tiles. Through tireless effort, skill and careful consideration, we have brought this roof back to its former glory.​
  • Claude N Smith Ltd Stamford Railway Station
    • Grade II* listed building in this historic town. A stunning cut limestone building with Collyweston limestone slate roof that was desperately in need of re-slating, as water damage was causing stonework spalling and displacement. Re-slated in this beautiful natural material will preserve this building for at least another 100 years.​
