CIOB Report Examines Construction’s Capacity to Meet Future Demand

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has released a new report assessing the construction industry’s capacity to deliver the UK’s growing demand for new homes and infrastructure.

The report paints a clear picture of the challenges currently facing the sector, including persistent market volatility, economic uncertainty, and workforce shortages. It argues that these pressures are preventing the industry from achieving the stability and productivity needed to meet national development goals.

To address these issues, the CIOB calls for a fundamental shift in the business environment within which construction operates. The report identifies five key areas for change, focusing on:

  1. Improving procurement and payment practices to ensure fairer, more sustainable contracting.

  2. Boosting skills and training investment to attract and retain the next generation of workers.

  3. Driving innovation and digital adoption to increase productivity and reduce waste.

  4. Enhancing collaboration and transparency across the supply chain.

  5. Embedding sustainability and resilience at the heart of all future construction projects.

By tackling these priorities, the CIOB believes the industry can build the capacity and resilience needed to deliver the homes, infrastructure, and communities the UK requires, both now and in the future.
