The international roofing industry converged in Edinburgh for the 67th IFD Congress & Awards on 25-28 September and the NFRC were delighted to host an exhibition alongside the Congress, as well as a spectacular Traditional Evening at Edinburgh Castle.

Members of the International Federation for the Roofing Trade (IFD) represent 18,500 contracting firms and over 135,00 employees, with a £22Bn turnover, and the event provided an outstanding platform for the NFRC to promote itself and its members to global organisations.

Conference and Showcase Exhibition

In front of a packed conference James Talman gave a wide-ranging presentation on NFRC and its aims, touching on the significant role that NFRC members can play in meeting modern challenges such as climate change.

Gary Walpole spoke about the need for our industry to tackle mental health, an issue that is now being tackled by the IFD, which has created a working group. Richard Miller and Jon Vanstone on RoofCERT with its current and future positions.

Alongside the conference was the Showcase Exhibition sponsored by TECHNONICOL and exhibited 11 stands including NFRC and RoofCERT. The exhibition featured a seminar area with presentations from Edinburgh Council and Napier University, giving local market and skills data.

Traditional Evening

NFRC hosted the Traditional Evening at Edinburgh Castle, which was branded with the NFRC and sponsor Velux logos. James Talman also addressed the Congress with Mr Zhu of the Chinese Waterproofing Association and awarded Dr William Chan the NFRC Pin of Honour for his services to NFRC and the Roofing Industry.

Dr Chan has been a leader in the development of UK, European and US standards since 1971, including the development of BS 5534:2014 for slating and tiling on pitched roofs. He has also been convenor of CEN/TC 128/WG3 (Structural design guidance for specifying solar fixings).
